Summer is getting closer by the second and that means a lot people hitting the beach. Now more than ever, it’s so important to be aware of our impact on nature and take steps to ensure we have fun in a sustainable way. Here are a few of our top tips when it comes to keeping the environment in mind this summer.
1. Take Your Rubbish With You
Nature wants nothing from you but your presence and your footprints. Make sure to dispose of all your rubbish correctly and take extra care to tuck away any wrappers and lightweight plastics which might fly away in the wind.
2. Be Kind To Biodiversity
What would you do if someone came into your home one day and started pulling down walls, taking things that didn’t belong to them and leaving a mess behind? The beach is home to countless species of live animals, including penguins, fish, starfish, crabs, larger mammals and birds who are just doing their thing. They probably don’t want to be picked up or interrupted – it’s best to let them be.
3. Use Reef Safe Sunscreen
There is a lot to unpack on this one! Many sunscreens contain chemicals that are extremely damaging to marine life. The underwater world is already under a lot of pressure from factors such as water pollution, climate change and overfishing. The least we could do is make the switch to reef-safe sunscreen! We stock Avocado Zinc, which is a completely natural, water resistant, broad spectrum sunscreen. Not only is it better for the ocean but it’s also better for you – win-win.
4. Take 3 For The Sea
It’s that simple – “take three pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway or anywhere and you have made a difference”. We can’t recommend this highly enough. Check out www.take3.org for more info, facts or to make a donation.
