Surf, Sip & Explore - A Seven Day Roadtrip Itinerary

There is truly no better way to experience the east coast of Australia than by a road trip. That's why we've put together a seven day road trip itinerary from Byron Bay to Crescent Head, with plenty of opportunities for surfing, good coffee, beautiful sunrises, and beach locations. There's a mix of all the elements you're looking for, including op shops, hikes, and waterfalls!

Pack your van, or hire ours, and let's get into it! 

Please note that road conditions and attractions may change, so it's always good to double-check and adjust the itinerary accordingly before your trip. 

Day 1: Byron Bay

  • Begin your journey in none other than beautiful Byron Bay, a famous surf town known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture.
  • Visit Wategos Beach for a morning surf session.
  • Enjoy a delicious brunch at one of Byron Bay's many excellent cafes known for their coffee. Our favourite is Folk in the Industry Estate! 
  • Explore the town's boutiques, art galleries, and the famous Byron Bay Lighthouse for stunning coastal views.
  • Spend the night at a campsite near Byron Bay, allowing you to wake up to the sound of crashing waves.

Day 2: Byron Bay to Yamba

  • Drive further south to Yamba, a charming coastal town known for its pristine beaches and relaxed atmosphere.
  • Stop to check out the op shops here, we've had some great finds!
  • Take a short hike to the Angourie Blue Pool, a stunning natural pool nestled amidst rocky cliffs.
  • Enjoy the surf at one of the local beaches like Pippi Beach or Turners Beach.
  • Drive 30 minutes south to stay overnight at Broom's Head Holiday Park for the best oceanside campsites and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean.

Day 3: Yamba to Hat Head

  • Head south towards Hat Head, a lesser-known gem with beautiful beaches and coastal walks.
  • Stop by the charming town of Maclean, known for its Scottish heritage and vibrant murals.
  • Explore Hat Head National Park and hike the Korogoro Creek Nature Trail, which leads to a beautiful lagoon.
  • Visit Hat Head Beach and enjoy some surfing or relaxation on the pristine sand.
  • Camp overnight at Hat Head National Park or a nearby campsite.

Day 4: Hat Head to South West Rocks

  • Drive to South West Rocks, a coastal town known for its historic Trial Bay Gaol and beautiful beaches.
  • Explore Trial Bay Gaol and learn about its fascinating history.
  • Head to Horseshoe Bay or Main Beach for some more surfing or swimming.
  • Check out the local op shops in South West Rocks for unique finds.
  • Spend the night at a campsite near the beach.

Day 5: South West Rocks to Port Macquarie

  • Continue south to Port Macquarie, a coastal city with stunning beaches and lush nature reserves.
  • Start your day with a sunrise view at Town Beach or Tacking Point Lighthouse.
  • Visit the Koala Hospital and learn about their conservation efforts.
  • Explore the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre and take the Rainforest Boardwalk through the lush forest.
  • Grab a coffee and relax at one of Port Macquarie's charming cafes.
  • Camp overnight at a campsite near Port Macquarie.

Day 6: Port Macquarie to Seal Rocks

  • Drive to Seal Rocks, a hidden gem known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vibe.
  • Visit Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse for breathtaking coastal views.
  • Take a short hike to the stunning Number One Beach.
  • Enjoy some more surfing at the various breaks around Seal Rocks.
  • Camp overnight at a campsite near the beach. 

Day 7: Seal Rocks to Crescent Head

  • Head to Crescent Head, known for its famous surf break and beautiful coastline.
  • Spend the morning surfing or relaxing at Crescent Head Beach.
  • Explore the nearby Hat Head National Park and take the Smoky Cape Walk for panoramic views.
  • Enjoy the best hot pies from Barnett's Bakery.
  • Head down Point Plomer Road for surfing on the back beaches and camp at the Racecourse Campground for the best fishing, surfing and whale watching!
